Welcome to this special NCTE email newsletter!
Safer Internet Day (SID) is being celebrated across the globe on Tuesday February 7th. SID is an annual event that promotes safer and more responsible use of the Internet and mobile phones, especially among children and young people.
The theme for SID 2012 is Connecting Generations, with the slogan: Discover the Internet together...safely!
The NCTE’s Internet Safety initiative Webwise wants to help you celebrate SID. Continue reading to find suggestions for activities and events that can held in your school, classroom and at home to take part in this global event and to help celebrate the day. Webwise: Launch of Webwise Primary School Resources
The Webwise Primary Teachers’ Handbook
The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald TD launched The Webwise Primary Teachers’ Handbook on the 6th February, the eve of SID in St Brigid’s Primary School, Haddington Road, Dublin.
The Handbook has been developed for primary school teachers who wish to introduce internet safety into their teaching of the Social Personal and Health Education (SPHE) curriculum.

Garda Schools Primary Programme: Respectful Communication Online Pack
Also launched on the 6th February in St Brigid’s Primary School, Haddington Road, Dublin was the Garda Schools Primary Programme: Respectful Communication Online Pack by the Garda Commissioner, Martin Callinan. The Pack is designed to complement the delivery of the Webwise Primary Schools Programme.
The Repectful Communication Online programme aims to foster a sense of care and respect for others online or when using mobile phones and to equip children with the skills to deal effectively with textbullying and cyberbullying. It will help develop and enhance the children's social skills of communication, cooperation and conflict resolution.

NCTE: Free Internet Safety online course for teachers
To help celebrate SID 2012, NCTE learning online has made a short 40 minute online course, Internet Safety in School & Classroom, temporarily available to teachers without enrolment.
Why not check out this course as well as the other free online courses that are available on NCTE learning online.
Note: Enrolment for the Developing e-Learning in your School (Primary) course is closing soon and a Scoilnet Teacher Account is required to enrol in it.

Webwise: Industry volunteers Talks in Schools Programme
Industry volunteers from Microsoft, UPC and O2 will visit over 15,000 primary school children across Ireland to promote Internet Safety and encourage children and teachers to ‘Discover the digital world together…. safely!’ for Safer Internet Day.

Safer Internet Workshops delivered by National Parents Council Primary trainers will take place around the country to help parents to be webwise for SID 2012.

Webwise: Tips for Teachers flyer
Safer Internet Day 2012 sees the publication of the Webwise Youth Panel’s “Tips for Teachers from Facebooking Students”. The Webwise Youth Panel suggest tips on protecting privacy, controlling sharing and controlling who can find you when social networking.

Dublin City Lord Mayor’s Safer Internet Day event
The Lord Mayor, Councillor Andrew Montague in The Wood Quay Venue, Dublin Civic Offices, Dublin 8 will host the launch of the short report and panel discussion “Irish Kids Online: Youth and Parent Perspectives” today the 7th February, to mark Safer Internet Day (SID).
Following the launch a panel discussion of parents and young people will debate how families can work together to help each other discover the Internet together safely.

Webwise Families - Engage, Connect, Play!
